The NATO Senior Mentor Programme is composed of former Flag or General Officers, recommended by their respective Chiefs of Defence to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), to support NATO commanders and commands as they train and prepare for operations.

General Sir James Everard joined the 17th/21st Lancers in 1983, spending his formative years on the Chief tain and Challenger Main Battle tank in the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR).
His final three appointments were as the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff for Military Strategy and Operation (United Kingdom ministry of Defence), Commander UK Field Army and finally as the 4* NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe leaving the Army in 2020. On retirement he assumed the role of Lead Senior Mentor for Allied Command Operations.
