We are proud to have supported NATO’s largest command post exercise this year, STEADFAST JUPITER 2023 (#STJU23), with our expertise in Command and Control. The major computer-assisted command post exercise (CAX/CPX) concluded on October 19, 2023 and involved approximately 7,000 participants and took place at 27 locations across Europe and North America.

Sponsored by SHAPE and directed by the Joint Warfare Centre (JWC), STEADFAST JUPITER 2023 was NATO’s largest CAX/CPX this year, designed to train and evaluate the NATO Response Force 2024 (NRF24) under the leadership of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS), as well as several other NATO entities. It involved SHAPE, JFCBS, NRF24, SFN, TCCs, NCS JFAC MNCG, JSEC, LANDCOM, MARCOM, HQ ARRC, ITAMARFOR, POL SOCC, and JLSG Brunssum in planning and conducting an Article 5 Theatre-wide operation.

Lieutenant Colonel Jan ter Braake, a supporting Staff Officer on behalf of the NATO C2COE for the exercise, said, “As NATO C2COE, we were embedded in the JWC Training Advisory team at JFC Brunssum. Our primary focus during the execution of the exercise was on the effectiveness of the decision-making process of the entire C2 structure, supported by the right processes and C2-relationships (e.g., dynamic SSI). This well-organized exercise was once again a great showcase of the capabilities of the organizing entities, and it was a pleasure to be part of it.

From the initial planning in 2021, through the 10-day execution phase, which kicked off on October 10, and to the upcoming After-Action Review, effective collaboration among diverse stakeholders has played a crucial role in the success of STEADFAST JUPITER 2023.

Overall, the exercise challenged the training audiences at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels, focusing on the challenges of deterrence across all warfare domains, including air, sea, land, cyber, space, as well as the information battlespace. STEADFAST JUPITER 2023 is a milestone in operationalizing the Concept for the Deterrence and Defense of the Euro-Atlantic Area, a strategy for the short to medium term that enables Allies to rapidly strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defense posture in all domains.
