An Agile C2 Method - Adapting design thinking for military contexts
Military leaders need more agile Command and Control (C2) methods to appropriately address the challenges of the increasingly complex and changing military operational conditions. Moreover, officers who are adequately prepared for such military environments through suitable training programs can greatly contribute to the C2 domain. Specific to the military context, we have developed a Military Design Thinking (MDT) method as an innovative and flexible C2 method to foster organizational innovation in general, and training programs in particular. The development process consisted of three steps: 1) use civilian design thinking principles as a format for military design thinking, 2) provide additional guidance for the use of design thinking in a military setting, and 3) fine-tune design thinking for military use in consultation with the staff of a Dutch military exercise. Future research could focus on an actual implementation of this MDT method to create organizational innovation in the military setting and to provide recommendations on the future use of this MDT method.
