Directly following the NATO C2COE C2 Conference last week, the Director of the NATO C2COE, Colonel Mietta Groeneveld was invited by Dr. Peter Roberts to join his Command and Control Podcast. They discussed the quick reflections on the conference, delved into the challenges of Multi-Domain Operations and Synchronization, and explored the implications of that on command and control.

Some take-aways:

  • “We, the military, can win the battle, but we cannot win a war alone. Deterrence today requires synchronisation at national and multinational levels, across military, civil, and industry actions, to achieve converging effects towards a common goal.”
  • “Our military actions heavily rely on civil enablement, e.g. Industry’s rapid innovation cycles in fields like IT and cybersecurity far outpace military procurement. NATO should leverage this agility, collaboration with civil entities is vital.”
  • “Military leaders must act faster than their adversaries. Decentralized decision-making and a deep understanding of technology will define successful commanders.”
  • “There are no small countries in NATO, there are only fast countries and slow countries”
  • “It’s time to shift from information sharing to data sharing. Sharing raw data enables broader analysis and unlocks new insights, critical for effective decision-making.”
  • “How different are the defense requirements from a bank’s requirements or a hospital’s requirements when it comes to data security and data sharing?”
  • NATO’s C2 structures must embrace agility—organizational, cognitive, and institutional—to keep pace with modern threats and fast changing technologies. We must increase our adaptability to be able to transform continuously, not in periodic cycles.
