On January 25th 2018 the NATO C2COE organized an event in cooperation with the Dutch Police. During this event the NATO C2COE briefed the police, firefighters and city planners on the implications of a (future) combined operation within an Urban environment. Special emphasis was put on Command & Control and interoperability.
Lieutenant Colonel Jelle Bode briefed about “Urbanisation“:
„The majority of the world’s population now live in urban areas, and the trend towards Urbanisation continues to rise. History has taught us that conflict and large-scale disasters often occur where people live. Therefore, if the majority of people are going to live in urban environments, including cities and megacities; an increasing number of future military operations will take place in these environments. Subsequently NATO needs to prepare for this eventuality.”
Colonel Henk Ras (Deputy Command and Chief of Staff – Defence Cyber Command) gave an introduction and inspiring briefing about Cyber Defence within the Dutch Ministry of Defence. Professor dr. Adelbert Bronkhorst (TNO) briefed about the future trends when looking at Command and Control focused on scientific and technological areas and the most important developments.
The NATO C2COE will continue to participate in the NATO Urbanization project with two persons; Subject Matter Expertise (SME) with regard to Command & Control (C2) and Operations Planning.
